Huge day.

The last several weeks have been so busy that I’ve spent little time thinking — and no time writing — about today’s Colts-Bears Super Bowl. It’s probably just as well, too, because if you happen to be as addicted to the NFL as I am, and you also happen to live in Michigan City, 80 miles from Chicago but firmly planted in the state of Indiana, today’s game is one of those rare sports fan moments that you know will only happen once in your life. I’m thankful that I’ ve had some big distractions the last several weeks, because otherwise the pure excitement would have probably liquefied me.
If there is one team out of 31 I’d love to be in the Super Bowl more than any other, it is the Chicago Bears. I’
ve lived in or near Chicago for ten years. It is a part of who I am, it is the best city in the world, and I love the place more than any other. I have a 10? Chicago flag hanging in my garage.
But there are 32 teams in the league. Four years ago I moved to Indiana, and this place has a way of growing on you. The Colts represent everything I like about Indiana — hard-working, humble, unassuming, and surprising, with hidden depth. And so if there is only one team I’
d like to see win the Super Bowl more than the Bears, and it is the Colts.
I’ve been excited about the prospect of a Colts-Bears Super Bowl since early September, when it was just a somewhat intriguing idea. But now that it is here I feel a bit torn. My Chicago friends call me a turncoat. Even in Michigan City, most folks are Bears fans. But you have to be true to who are you, so I say it again: I’m for both places, but in a head-to-head football game, I’
m for the Colts.
Put the Pizza Rolls in the oven; let the fun begin.
