The bad and the good.

Well, I guess I’m not waiting until the end of the year to get a new Mac Pro after all. This morning, in the middle of transfering a couple hundred pictures onto my Mac, I smelled a bit of smoke and then next thing I knew — BANG — huge sound and my Power Mac G5 shut off, never to be revived. I have since read more than I care to about the power supply problems of this line. Hopefully the data on my hard drives is not lost, otherwise that will be a huge loss (all my pictures, songs, recordings, finances, …) as well as a huge pain in the neck. I’m hoping to limit it to a huge pain in the neck.

The bright side is that this was the excuse I needed to order a new eight-core Mac Pro, which is coming this weekend. Goodness knows how long it will take to get everything back in place.

One rude awakening was to learn that Apple’s neat Time Machine feature cannot be used to restore a previous computer’s image onto a new piece of hardware. So apparently my Time Machine backup is … useless. WTF?
