Songs
A long time ago — okay, not that long ago — I was a professional singer/songwriter, or more accurately, a professional starving artist. I now have a family and a vocation that I’m passionate about, but I’m consciously trying to include music in my life in 2008 because it is such a big part of who I am and who I want to be. I’m hoping to have some new songs posted this year.
Here are some things from the vault, basically arranged in reverse chronological order. Everything is © J.W. Shuck, but you can download almost all of these songs for free at my last.fm page: http://www.last.fm/music/Jeff+Shuck.
Thanks for listening — I hope you enjoy it.
Lullaby #2
I recorded this song in 2005 for my niece Sierra. (The name comes from the fact that I am unoriginal. My first lullaby is included on brightest coldest blue, below.) I love the layering of the vocal parts on this one.
What You’ve Got
I wrote and performed this song at my sister’s wedding in 2001. It’s a harmless ditty that is in dire need of a good mastering job.
Each Brand New Blossom
I was commissioned to write this song for a small company on the occasion of their anniversary. I recorded it in 2000. This was my first real recording attempt with Logic, which was at version 4.7 at the time (it’s now at version 8!). Logic seemed incredibly rich and deep after the Roland VS-880 — actually, it still does. What a great program. The song, however … well, it has it’s moments. Again I say: Is there a mastering engineer in the house?
Sidewinder
I wrote “Sidewinder” in late 1998. I always liked its use of guitar, particularly after how piano-heavy my work on brightest coldest blue was.
brightest coldest blue (1998):
brightest coldest blue is a CD I released in 1998. I recorded it using a Roland MC-500 and the venerable VS-880. It seemed like high technology at the time!
Ten years ago! Holy smokes. I can still remember the simplistic equipment, half-full coffee shops, and crushing debt like it was yesterday. I’ve included every track from the CD. Want your own copy? I’d be happy to send you one. Let me know.
1: Shine Away
2: Leighann
3: Next Time
4: Happy February
5: Rain in the Night
6: A Farewell to Seven Sisters
7: One Good Reason
8: A Letter to Richard
9: The World is Just Waiting
10: Sunday Morning
11: Lullaby
Train Song
This was recorded live in 1996 for my demo tape — I used this to shop myself around to venues. I’ve always really liked this song. Simple, but sometimes simple is enough.

Jeff,
I just finished listening (again) to your CD, brightest coldest blue. My husband and I had met you at a small gathering for a fund raiser (where you played the piano and sang a couple of your songs) for a friend of mine for the Aids ride in Chicago. We enjoyed your music when we first heard you and we continue to enjoy listening to your one CD. I just went on line to see if you have done anything new. It seems that you have done a lot of “new” with three kids in five years. I am happy that you have found a vocation but am saddened to hear that you don’t have time to give the world new music. I wish you the best of life and hope that you are putting your wonderful talent to use in other areas of your life. Do you sing your kids to bed at night?
Thanks again for the music.
Lynda
